The great Neapolitan vanishing act

April 19, 2026
#SSC Napoli#SS Lazio

Antonio Conte’s Napoli decided that the best way to keep the Scudetto race interesting was to simply stop participating. In a performance that had all the tactical depth of a wet paper bag, the Partenopei watched their title dreams evaporate faster than a pizza in a wood-fired oven. SS Lazio, arriving as the supposed underdogs in 9th place, didn't just win; they essentially held a masterclass in how to ruin a party at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

Matteo Cancellieri took exactly six minutes to remind the home crowd that defending is, in fact, part of the job description. After Kenneth Taylor carved through the Napoli midfield like a hot knife through buffalo mozzarella, Cancellieri’s finish was as clinical as the silence that followed it. Napoli spent the rest of the half looking like a team that had forgotten where they parked their cars, managing to hold 67 percent of the ball while doing absolutely NOTHING with it.

Lazio even had the decency to offer Napoli a lifeline when Mattia Zaccagni fluffed a penalty after thirty minutes. It was a golden opportunity for the hosts to wake up, but instead, they chose to hit the snooze button. Vanja Milinkovic-Savic’s save was the only highlight for a Napoli side that finished the match with a grand total of zero shots on target. If you’re going to lose the league at home, you might at least try to hit the frame of the goal once or twice for the sake of the season ticket holders.

Toma Basic eventually put the misery out of its reach in the second half, tapping home after a Nuno Tavares sprint that left the Napoli backline looking like they were running through treacle. It was a professional, ruthless display from Maurizio Sarri’s men, who climb to 47 points and might actually remember what the European spots look like.

For Napoli, the math is now as grim as the performance. Twelve points behind Inter with only five games left means the champagne can stay in the cellar. This wasn't just a defeat; it was a DISASTER that effectively handed the trophy to the blue half of Milan on a silver platter. At least the fans won't have to worry about the stress of a title race anymore—mostly because there isn't one left.
