Milan's title race hits a Roman wall
If you were expecting AC Milan to put up a genuine fight for the Scudetto, I hope you kept the receipt for those expectations. Paulo Fonseca’s men traveled to the Olimpico with the alleged ambition of chasing down Inter, only to leave with the realization that they are currently much better at looking busy than actually winning football matches.
Lazio, sitting comfortably in a mediocre ninth place before kickoff, decided to play the role of the ultimate party poopers. They didn't even need to be particularly brilliant; they just had to wait for Milan to remember they are AC Milan. The breakthrough came in the 26th minute when Gustav Isaksen decided to remind the Rossoneri defense that marking is generally considered part of the job description. Adam Marušić provided the service, and Isaksen finished with the kind of clinical edge that Milan’s forwards apparently left at the Milanello training ground.
Before the goal, Kenneth Taylor had already rattled the woodwork, serving as a polite warning that Milan’s midfield was essentially a series of open doors. Did the visitors react? Of course not. They preferred a strategy of sterile possession and hopeful glances toward the referee.
The second half was a masterclass in frustration. Zachary Athekame thought he’d rescued a point in the 75th minute, but his celebrations were cut short by a VAR check that spotted a handball. It was the correct call, though that won't stop the Milan faithful from crying about it for the next fortnight. Their offensive output was a display of pure OFFENSIVE IMPOTENCE that should probably come with a viewer warning.
Even Maurizio Sarri getting sent off in the dying seconds for his usual touchline theatrics couldn't distract from the main event: Milan’s title hopes evaporating in the Roman humidity.
The result leaves Milan trailing Inter by a massive eight points with only nine games to go. At this rate, Inter could probably play their youth team for the rest of the season and still finish ten points clear. Milan isn't just out of the title race; they are now looking over their shoulder as Napoli breathes down their neck for second place. It was a TOTAL DISASTER for a team that claims to be elite but consistently folds like a cheap lawn chair when the pressure is applied.
Lazio climbs slightly, Milan sinks morally, and Inter fans are currently opening the champagne. Same old Serie A.
