Vila do Conde's mid-table misery

April 18, 2026
#Rio Ave FC#AVS

If you traveled to the Estádio do Rio Ave expecting a tactical masterclass, you clearly haven’t been paying attention to the Primeira Liga this season. Instead, we were treated to a 2-2 draw that was "spectacular" in the same way a kitchen fire is spectacular—lots of heat, plenty of panic, and everyone ends up smelling like smoke.

Rio Ave, sitting comfortably in the 11th-place void where ambition goes to die, decided to start the game as if they actually had somewhere to be. Ole Pohlmann struck early in the 18th minute, sweeping home a finish that suggested Rio Ave might actually put on a show for the home faithful. It looked like it would be a long afternoon for the visitors from Vila das Aves. But AVS, a team with more losses than a crypto enthusiast in a bear market, found a surprising equalizer through Tomané just after the half-hour mark. The home defense was nowhere to be found, presumably having an early coffee break.

The second half was pure ABSOLUTE madness. Pedro Lima popped up in the 68th minute to give AVS a lead, a sensation so foreign to the basement-dwellers that they almost looked confused about which way to run. For eleven glorious minutes, the traveling fans dared to dream of a second win this season. It was a beautiful, fleeting delusion that briefly convinced the players they weren't destined for the second division.

Naturally, Andreas Ntoi arrived in the 79th minute to ruin the party and ensure AVS didn’t get too ahead of themselves. He rose highest at a corner to restore the natural order of things, leaving the AVS keeper grasping at thin air. A point apiece, which is exactly what neither team really needed but both probably deserved after ninety minutes of defensive slapstick.

In the grand scheme of things, this result changes nothing except the electricity bill at the stadium. Rio Ave remains parked in the mid-table parking lot, safe from the drop but lightyears away from Europe. For AVS, it’s another week of TRAGICOMEDY at the bottom. They remain 18th, clutching their 12 points like a life vest made of lead. They might have avoided a defeat, but they haven't avoided the inevitable slide into the second tier.
