Lyon's Vertigo and the Burgundian Abyss

April 26, 2026
#Olympique Lyonnais#AJ Auxerre

Lyon’s latest outing was less of a tactical masterclass and more of a two-hour anxiety attack with a side of French fries. They eventually triumphed 3-2 over AJ Auxerre, but if you expected a comfortable evening at the Groupama Stadium, you clearly haven't been paying attention to the chaotic energy that defines this club. It was SPECTACULAR in the same way a car chase is spectacular: thrilling, but everyone involved looks like they’re about to have a heart attack.

Roman Yaremchuk, a man who occasionally remembers he is a professional striker, decided to grace us with his presence by bagging a brace. His first goal in the 19th minute was a rare moment of competence, but this is Lyon we are talking about. They have a pathological need to keep things "interesting." So, naturally, they allowed former defender Sinaly Diomandé to equalize before the break. Letting your ex-player score from a chaotic set-piece is the footballing equivalent of accidentally liking your ex’s vacation photo from three years ago. Embarrassing.

At 1-1, the halftime oranges probably tasted like ash for the home fans. Enter Corentin Tolisso. The captain didn’t just walk onto the pitch; he basically seized the steering wheel of a bus heading for a cliff. A goal and an assist within fifteen minutes of his introduction was a reminder that some players actually understand the concept of URGENCY. Yaremchuk’s second goal should have been the final nail in Auxerre’s coffin, but Lyon’s defense remains as porous as a wet sponge.

Bryan Okoh’s late deflected goal for the visitors ensured that the final minutes were spent in a state of pure, unadulterated PANIC. Lyon held on, moving up to 57 points and keeping their Champions League dreams firmly on the map. They currently sit in the top three, though their fans probably need a week in a darkened room to recover from the stress of it all.

For Auxerre, the situation is increasingly terminal. Stuck in the relegation play-off zone and four points from safety with three games left, they are essentially circling the drain. They fought hard, sure, but "trying your best" doesn't keep you in the top flight when your defense has the structural integrity of a warm croissant. Another day, another Lyon rollercoaster. If they ever learn to defend, the rest of the league might actually have to worry.
