Arteta's Glass Ceiling
Death, taxes, and Mikel Arteta leaving the Etihad with nothing but a polite handshake and a very detailed tactical notebook full of broken dreams. The "clash of titans" turned out to be more of a clash between a well-oiled machine and a very expensive set of Lego that still doesn't quite fit together when the pressure is on.
For forty-five minutes, we were actually treated to a contest. Arsenal went into the break level at 1-1, looking like they might finally prove that "the process" isn't just a fancy word for finishing second. They pressed, they harassed, and for a brief moment, City looked like they might have forgotten where they parked their private jets.
But hope is a cruel mistress in East Manchester. The second half was a slow, agonizing demonstration of why City are simply INEVITABLE. Pep Guardiola spent most of the period looking like he was solving complex physics equations in his head while Arteta frantically gestured like a man trying to land a plane in a thunderstorm.
City eventually found the breakthrough, and from that point on, it was less of a football match and more of a training session in ball retention. Arsenal players chased shadows until their lungs burned, while Rodri probably had enough time to check his stock portfolio between passes.
This 2-1 victory sends City soaring further away at the top, leaving the rest of the league to fight for the scraps of dignity left on the table. For Arsenal, itβs another moral victory to add to the cabinet, which is unfortunately getting quite crowded despite the lack of actual silverware. They remain in the hunt for the top four, which is basically the North London equivalent of winning the Champions League.
The title race hasn't quite been killed, but it's certainly in the intensive care unit. While the Gunners talk about progress and expected goals, City just keep collecting actual points. It turns out that having the best players and a manager who treats every match like a game of chess against a toddler is a fairly successful strategy. WHO KNEW?
