Craiova‑Getafe: A tango of nerves and near‑misses

The Europa Conference showdown in Craiova turned into a textbook case of “who can hold a draw longer”. Neither side managed to turn their early promise into a decisive blow, leaving the points table looking as unsettled as a cup of instant coffee.

From the first whistle, Craiova tried to impose their rhythm, pressing high and using the width of the Stadionul Ion Oblemenco. Their wingers, especially right‑flanker Adrian Matei, kept the ball in the opposition half, but the cross‑field passes often fell into the arms of Getafe’s well‑drilled back four. Getafe, meanwhile, set up in a compact 4‑2‑3‑1, forcing Craiova to work the angles and then waiting for a moment of laxity.

The decisive moment came in the 33rd minute when Getafe’s set‑piece specialist, Luis “El Mago” Sánchez, floated a corner that grazed a defender’s head and fell to the feet of forward Carlos Ruiz. Ruiz’s first‑time strike rattled the post, and the rebound was cleared by Craiova’s centre‑half, Mihai Popescu, who showed why he’s been a rock in the Romanian side’s defense all season. Popescu’s calm under pressure earned him a solid 7.9.

Craiova answered in the 58th minute. A quick break down the left saw Matei’s low drive into the box, where it was met by striker Andrei Dobrescu. Dobrescu’s effort was a hair’s breadth from the top corner, the ball skimming the post before the net rejected it. The Romanian forward’s work rate and movement were the bright spot for the hosts, meriting a 7.5.

Getafe, not content with a single flirtation, grew more adventurous after the break. Their midfield pivot, veteran Álex García, began to dictate tempo, linking the defense to the attack with crisp passes. García’s composure earned him an 8.2, the highest rating on the pitch.

Both managers made late substitutions that did little to alter the balance. Craiova’s coach, Răzvan Ionescu, introduced a fresh midfielder, but the team’s shape remained static. Getafe’s Mirko López, subbed on for a tired full‑back, added a little pace on the flank but couldn’t carve open a defence that was already set for a stalemate.

The draw leaves both clubs perched in the middle of their groups, a point that does little to change the hierarchy but does keep the pressure on. Craiova will have to turn their near‑misses into goals if they hope to climb the table, while Getafe must tighten up their defence to avoid dropping points against lower‑ranked opponents.
