Welcome to the Estádio José Gomes, where CF Estrela da Amadora and Gil Vicente decided that defending was merely a suggestion rather than a requirement. In a match that billed itself as "spectaculaire," we instead got a chaotic 2-2 draw that left both managers looking like they’d just watched their house keys fall down a storm drain.

Gil Vicente, sitting comfortably in 5th place and dreaming of European tours, started the afternoon like a team that actually remembered how to play football. They were gifted a penalty in the 14th minute after the VAR officials spent five minutes squinting at a screen like they were trying to find Waldo. Murilo converted the spot-kick with the nonchalance of a man buying a loaf of bread, and for the rest of the half, Estrela looked like they were running through wet concrete.

Ianis Stoica managed to put the ball in the net twice for the hosts before the break, only for the linesman to ruin his fun both times. It’s hard to tell if Stoica is naturally impatient or if he just views the offside rule as an oppressive social construct.

Whatever was in the half-time tea worked wonders for Estrela. Jovane Cabral equalized in the 54th minute, and by the 67th, Abraham Marcus had completed the turnaround to put the 12th-placed side ahead. The home fans were actually STARTING TO BELIEVE they might pull off a heist against the high-flyers from Barcelos.

Naturally, that hope lasted approximately 120 seconds.

Estrela’s defense decided to take a collective nap, allowing Santi García to level the score at 2-2 before the stadium announcer had even finished shouting Marcus’s name. It was an ABSOLUTE MELTDOWN in focus that perfectly summarized why Estrela is hovering in the bottom half of the table while Gil Vicente is chasing Braga for 4th.

Gil Vicente finished the game with 19 shots to Estrela’s 9, proving that they are excellent at everything except the part where you actually win the game. A point apiece does little for Gil Vicente’s European ambitions, and while Estrela stays clear of the relegation muck, they’ll be wondering how they managed to fumble the bag quite so efficiently.

TRULY HEROIC levels of inconsistency from everyone involved. Pass the ibuprofen.
