Baggies' Cup Comfort Zone vs. Addicks' Audition

Ah, the League Cup. That glorious midweek distraction, often treated with all the enthusiasm of a tax audit. Down in 18th, Charlton Athletic arrive at The Hawthorns with little to lose and, frankly, not much to gain beyond a morale boost. Manager Michael Appleton, whose job stability often feels like it's written in sand, will likely field a mix of youth and experience. They've shown flashes of brilliance this season, usually when absolutely no one is watching, snatching a point here or there. Their away record, however, is about as impressive as a wet weekend in Skegness. They concede goals like they're going out of fashion but occasionally pull a rabbit out of the hat. Will they come to park the bus, or will they actually try to play football? The latter seems ambitious.

So, what do we have? A West Brom side probably not taking it seriously enough, against a Charlton side who might just be TOO serious about it. The Hawthorns will be buzzing... with the sound of polite applause for corners. This has all the makings of a classic League Cup tie: a slow burner, a moment of individual brilliance (or utter defensive incompetence), and VAR controversies if we're REALLY lucky. Don't expect fireworks, but expect something. The Baggies might just have enough squad depth to overcome their own apathy.
