Right, gather 'round, you mugs, because it’s time for the Carabao Cup – or as we like to call it, the glorified pre-season friendly nobody really wants to win, featuring two Championship mainstays who’d probably rather be focusing on not getting relegated.

This Tuesday, it’s Bristol City vs. Coventry City. A clash of titans? More like a clash of teams who both know deep down their best chance of silverware is probably a pub quiz.

Bristol City, playing at home, will be feeling all warm and fuzzy. Ashton Gate, under the lights, a chance to… well, not much, really. The Robins are a team perennially stuck in that Championship sweet spot: too good to go down, not quite good enough to go up. Their "cup run" usually consists of winning one game, getting everyone excited, then promptly falling over against a Premier League side who played their reserves. Expect them to trot out a few youngsters, a few veterans trying to prove they still exist, and hope for the best.

Then there’s Coventry City. The Sky Blues, fresh off… well, being in the Championship. They’re a side that can show flashes of brilliance, usually followed by an inexplicable collapse that leaves fans wondering if they accidentally swapped out their boots for clown shoes. Will they take this seriously? Probably. Will they have the quality to consistently break down a stubborn Bristol City side? That’s the multi-million-dollar question, and frankly, we’re not holding our breath.

This isn’t about tactical masterclasses; it’s about who wants it less in the 80th minute, when both sets of players are thinking about their next league game. It’s a chance for one manager to say, "We gave a good account of ourselves," after a narrow defeat, or "We're building momentum!" after a scrappy win. Either way, it’s not exactly going to set the world alight.

Expect a gritty, cagey affair. Plenty of endeavour, not a whole lot of end product. One moment of either brilliance or sheer defensive incompetence will likely settle it.

Prediction: Bristol City 1 – 0 Coventry City. Someone will trip over the ball and it’ll somehow end up in the net.
