Roman circus welcomes Slovakian tourists
The UEFA Champions League anthem will ring out across the Stadio Olimpico, and somewhere in the Italian capital, a Romanista is already having a nervous breakdown. Welcome to AS Roma in Europe, where absolutely nothing is EVER allowed to be straightforward.
On paper, welcoming Ε K Slovan Bratislava should be as routine as a morning espresso. The Slovakian champions are plucky, disciplined, and thoroughly out of their financial and tactical depth. Slovanβs European adventures are cute, endearing, and usually end the moment an elite side remembers to turn up for the second half.
Yet, if any club on this continent specializes in turning an open-and-shut case into a full-blown existential crisis, it is the Giallorossi. Roma possesses the unique, infuriating talent of making modest visitors look like 1970 Brazil for random twenty-minute spells. A misplaced pass here, an unnecessary red card there, and suddenly Vladimir Weissβs men might actually believe they can pull off the heist of the century along the Tiber.
Bratislava will inevitably deploy the classic European underdog blueprint: park the team bus, leave two strikers stranded on an island, and pray for a set-piece miracle. It is an honorable strategy, but it requires Roma to cooperate by being completely incompetent in front of goal. While that is never off the table with this Roman side, the gulf in sheer individual quality is just too vast to ignore.
Expect forty minutes of Roman huffing and puffing, five minutes of collective fury from the Curva Sud, and then the inevitable burst of quality that restores order. It will not be pretty, it will not be calm, but it will be three points.
Prediction: Roma endure twenty minutes of sheer self-inflicted terror before cruising to an unconvincing 3-0 victory.
