Hammers Turn Up the Heat on Plucky Pompey
EFL Cup. The stage where Premier League giants sometimes remember they're giants, and lower-league hopefuls always dream of glory. West Ham, comfortably ensconced in mid-table obscurity (let's say 9th in the top flight), hosted League One's 5th-placed Portsmouth. A classic David vs. Goliath? Only if David was already halfway down the tunnel before kick-off.
The first 45 minutes, however, served up a grand total of... nothing. A stalemate. A polite handshake. A collective yawn from the London Stadium faithful who, one suspects, expected their expensive season tickets to buy them more than a glorified training session against the plucky visitors. 0-0 at the break. Was this a cup upset brewing? Or just West Ham remembering how to play football after their half-time tea?
Thankfully, the Hammers remembered which way the goal was pointing. The second half was a different beast entirely. Three goals for the home side, a solitary consolation for Portsmouth β which, let's be honest, felt more like a participation trophy than a genuine comeback attempt. The floodgates opened, the quality shone through, and the inevitable happened. West Ham, to the surprise of absolutely nobody with a working pair of eyes, put the game to bed. It was a SPECTACULAR turn-around from the first half snooze-fest.
